Our Mission

Milwaukee Spotlight is the first and only organization dedicated solely to helping youth in Wisconsin, and beyond, express their visions and their voices through film and to showcase their accomplishments in an annual festival. Last year, the festival featured 40 films from 12 Wisconsin schools and also attracted submissions from students in California, Washington, Texas, Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri, and New York—all eager to share in our mission. This year, with a dedicated team of students, teachers, community advocates, and festival partners, we are preparing an exciting fall festival. The Grand Prize winning film will automatically be screened at the 2008 Milwaukee International Film Festival, and other prizes will be awarded to the winners of the other categories.

What’s special about Milwaukee

Aside from being the place the founders are from, Milwaukee is the largest city in Wisconsin, a state that’s fast becoming a hub for the independent film industry. In the last couple of years, legislation that supports the growth of the film industry was passed in this state, and many are now enjoying the benefits. (Read more on the Film Wisconsin website.)

A variety of urban and natural settings, proximity to Lake Michigan, and a diverse population provide the raw materials many filmmakers are now choosing to realize their artistic vision.

We want to see young filmmakers grow up in our state, or come from other states to learn here, and share skills with others. And then, we want them to stick around and add value to our communities through their work.
